Explain the player’s current role with recent, observable examples. Separate today’s lineup decision from a permanent judgment about ability or potential.
Make the next step concrete
“Right now, I see your role as…”
“The next behavior I need to see more consistently is…”
“A recent example was…”
“Let’s revisit this after…”
Keep the timeline honest
- Say what the player can influence.
- Name what depends on teammates, opponents, availability, or future form.
- Do not promise minutes, positions, or promotion you cannot control.
Invite a response
Ask the player to explain what they heard and what support they need. Clarity is confirmed by understanding, not by how much the coach said.
